What is BMI?

BODY MASS INDEX (BMI) is a statistical measurement where the person’s weight and height is compared. It is a tool that can estimate a healthy body weight based on the person’s height. It is commonly used to identify a weight problem such as overweight, underweight and obesity. In another words, BMI estimates whether you are at a healthy weight. It is well known that being overweight can damage your heart and can lead to other serious health problems which include diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure and many others conditions.

How can you determine your BMI?

1. Multiply your weight in pound by 703
2. Divide that answer by your height in inches
3. Divide that answer by your height in inches again

Then use the chart below to find out which category you fall into, and whether you should be concerned about your weight.

Another way to determine the BMI is to use the BMI chart, which shows BMI as a function of weight (horizontal axis) and height (vertical axis) use curve lines for different values of BMI or colors for different BMI categories. Look for your weight and your height, and draw two imaginary lines in both directions and see where they come together in the chart. That is you BMI!

There are some exceptions where BMI is not accurate. Elder people should have a BMI between 25 and 27 instead of under 25. Children should not use the BMI calculator or chart, although the BMI is calculated the same way as for adults, but they are compared to typical values for other children of the same age, talk to the child’s doctor. Body builders have more muscle than fat, therefore their BMI are higher since muscle weight more than fat tissue.
